Moss Control

Moss Control

Moss is a very resilient plant that can survive in most conditions. And whilst it provides green coverage and feels spongy underfoot, if it is not kept under control, it can often take over a lawn and prevent healthy grass growing.

If your lawn is suffering from moss, it is important to take on a process of removing the moss and then also try to prevent it returning.

As with all treatments, it is important to understand the underlying cause of the problem and deal with that issue first, before repairing the lawn. Common factors include lack of sunlight, soil type and drainage, compacted soil and aggressive mowing, which can restrict the ability for the grass leaves to retain moisture. Your Hampshire Lawncraft expert will be able to identify the cause of the problem and then offer an appropriate treatment plan.

What moss treatments are available?

At Hampshire Lawncraft we can provide several options for moss removal depending on the requirements of the lawn and the specific situation.

Moss control solution

Using a specialist moss control solution, containing Iron Sulphate we can inhibit the formation and development of moss, whilst also toughening the grass plant against disease and stimulating chlorophyll production to green up the lawn. This is sometimes all the lawn needs and can be extremely effective at redressing the balance between grass and moss. The best time to apply this is during the winter months when the moss is prevalent and this treatment forms a component of our Seasonal and Seasonal Plus treatment plans.

Moss/thatch inhibiting fertiliser

Another useful tool in the lawn care arsenal is this specialist fertiliser containing composting bacteria, which attacks the moss though its high potassium content and then returns the dead moss to the soil as nutrition for the grass. The fertiliser is a slow burner used during the summer months to gradually swing the balance from the moss towards the grass. It can also be very effective at removing thatch from the soil, a common cause of moss. The moss/thatch inhibiting fertiliser can be applied in place of either of the more conventional summer fertilisers as part of a regular treatment plan and constitutes a useful second prong in the battle against moss.

Scarification

If the moss in your lawn is rampant or if there is a significant depth of thatch then an alternative solution is to scarify the lawn hard to remove the excess moss and thatch. This is a very effective technique applied typically during autumn and often in conjunction with a moss control and will often need to be followed by an overseed to thicken the lawn back up again. Your Hampshire Lawncraft expert will be happy to advise the best approach for your lawn.

How do I prevent moss from reoccurring?

Once the initial moss is removed, it is important to maintain a regular treatment plan to ensure the moss is kept under control. This involves keeping the lawn well aerated, cutting back any overhanging plants and trees, collecting leaves regularly, mowing frequently and only ever cutting a maximum third of the length of the grass at a time and ensuring that the lawn is well nourished during the growing season. Hampshire Lawncraft Seasonal and Seasonal Plus treatments are designed specifically to achieve these objectives.
