Overseeding

Do I need to overseed my lawn?

Most lawns will benefit from annual overseeding, especially if you have bare patches or thinner areas.

Overseeding is the process of sowing new seed into an existing lawn and will ultimately help to thicken your lawn, improve the colour and reduce weed and moss coverage as the grass becomes stronger.

It’s important to use the right type of lawn seed and the choice of seed mix will depend on the specific growing conditions of your individual lawn. Hampshire Lawncraft’s expert will assess the optimum blend for your lawn to ensure best results.

When is the best time to overseed a lawn?

Spring and autumn are the ideal times for overseeding an existing lawn, avoiding the hottest and coldest months of the year. Seeds need moisture and warmth to germinate, the ideal temperature is around 13ºC and a rainy period is perfect!

How should my lawn be prepared for overseeding?

To get the most out of overseeding, we recommend the use of a pre-seeding fertiliser to deliver nutrition to the newly germinated grass, as well as aeration and/or scarification to open up the soil and a top dressing to ensure that the seed is in good contact with the soil. We’ll always advise the best method of preparation before the overseed and discuss the most cost effective and beneficial techniques.

What other considerations are there when overseeding?

The seed will need to be protected from birds if possible, either by netting or by placing something to deter the birds such as foil on sticks or old CDs on string. The seed will need to stay moist so daily watering is essential if there is no rainfall and footfall on the newly overseeded lawn should be minimised for as long as possible. Don’t be in a hurry to mow and for the first cut, use a high mowing height and only ever take off a third of the growth at a time.
